Full Scribe Log Homes

Also known as the Scandinavian Style Log Home, the term “full scribe laterals” simply means that the length of each log is connected to the one above and below it with perfect joinery.  There is not much more effort for a knowledgeable builer to scribe fit the laterals, which makes the building structurally superior.  No matter what the corner style - complex dovetails or shrink to fit saddle notches - we promote full scribe joinery.  At Laverty Log Homes we use the Double Scribe Joinery system.

The best type of home, in our opinion, is the full scribe, Scandinavian log home.  Scandinavian log construction requires the most skill to construct, but it is also the strongest, healthiest and perhaps environmentally friendly of timber construction.  In fact there are documented cases of direct tornado hits on full scribe, handcrafted log homes and the structures are still standing!

These log homes are usually built with massive round logs.  Each log is custom notched and fit together.  There are many techniques used to keep the joinery tight after settling, although there is not unanimous agreement among builders about which techniques works best.

Experience tells us to consider several factors, such as: species of wood, climate / humidity, joinery style, roof weight (the heavier the better), through bolts and heating options.  Settling is not something to be scared of, as long as the builder has taken steps to address it.  In fact, it can be used to a builder’s advantage (see Settling)
