Doublescribe cross section

This is a cross section of the Double Scribe joinery (or Beckedorf lateral) we use at Laverty Log Homes.  It is shaped like a tongue and groove so that we can have a space for a double log home gasket and boron treated wool insulation infill, which creates a seal against the elements.   This style of connection works with the natural behaviour of wood, rather than fighting against it.

By cutting the “V” and relief kerf ontop of the bottom log, we are ensuring that the major check (drying crack along the grain of the log) occurs ontop of the log.  This means that the log will try to spread against the biting edge of the log above it and stay tight.  This is in contrast to what occurs with conventional cope joinery, where the check occurs in the bottom of the log and spreads the tight fit away from the log it is mated to.

Our fits of handcrafted horizontal log work are second to none.  When we deliver a home to you, we challenge you to get a piece of paper in one of our notches!  You can’t, because we are not satisfied until our logs fit perfectly.  If you want a well crafted home, that makes use of all the modern developments in building techniques, we deliver.
