Air Infiltration Prevention

Air infiltration is an important area to pay close attention to when building a log home.  There are two main areas of concern - sealing wood joinery and sealing the areas where conventional framing meets log work.

At Laverty Log Homes, we do Not use the common practice of filling the notches and laterals with fiberglass.   Fiberglass is Not a gasket!  Log homes that only have fiberglass in the joinery fail blowdoor tests and leak air.  Another problem is fiberglass is hydroscopic in nature, which means fiberglass holds moisture.  The last place a person would want moisture trapped is in the center of the log!  In Europe, there is a growing consensus that fiberglass is harmful to human health.  Laverty Log Homes does not believe it is in your interest to use fiberglass.

At Laverty Log Homes, we believe that all logwork needs to be double gasketted with a quality, compressable log home gasket (on both the heated and unheated side of the joinery).   We also fill the space inbetween the gasket with boron treated wool insulation.

Where conventional framing meets log work requires communication between the trades and the log builder.  At Laverty Log Homes, we will provide you with the support you need to communicate the best practices for sealing these details in your log home (ask about our owners manual).  We will prep your home for other trades that will be working on your building and provide documentation to assist them in their tasks of finishing your home.

Let us take care of the details.
